Victim of Identity Theft / Fraud
Identity theft is the fastest-growing crime in America, it is estimated that nearly 1 million people will be, or have been, a victim of identity theft.
This Financial crimes packet should be completed once you have contacted the Selma Police Department and have obtained a police report number related to your financial crime. To obtain a police report number, contact 210-653-0033 or 210-651-5368. Please have all information regarding your case available before you call in order to provide the report taker with specific details concerning the offense(s). Please keep track of your report number as creditors, financial institutions and credit reporting agencies will ask for it.
If You Are a Victim of Identity Theft or Fraud
#1 Complete the “financial crimes packet” and email it to cid@ci.selma.tx.us or you can hand deliver or mail it to 9375 Corporate Drive Selma, Texas. Attention to “Criminal Investigations”.
#2 Report the identity theft immediately to one of the credit reporting agencies and ask them to place a fraud alert on your account. The alert will remain on your report for about 90 days unless you choose to extend the alert or ask for a security freeze. If you call one agency, they will forward the fraud alert to the others: TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289 Equifax: 1-800-525-6285 Experian: 1-888-397-3742
#3 Fill out the Packet above and sent credit dispute letters to companies for new accounts, or for fraud on existing accounts, and to the credit reporting bureaus.
#4 Consider putting a security freeze on your credit report.
#5 Close any affected accounts and stop payment on any stolen checks. Consider putting additional layers of security on any accounts that might be vulnerable.
#6 Notify the Department of Motor Vehicles if your driver's license has been stolen.
#7 If your checkbook has been stolen notify your financial institution and check approval agencies: Telecheck (www.telecheck.com) 1-800-710-9898 or Certegy, Inc. (previously Equifax Check Systems) 1-800-437-5120
#8 Call the Social Security fraud hotline at 1-800-269-0271 if you believe your Social Security information has been compromised.
#9 If an identity thief has used your personal information to create tax problems call the IRS at 1-877-777-4778 or go to the IRS website (www.irs.gov/advocate)
#10 For more information log onto the Federal Trade Commission (www.ftc.gov). Report Internet fraud to the Internet Crime Complaint Center ( http://www.ic3.gov/) or call FTC at 1-877-ID-THEFT (1-877-438-4338).
